On behalf of theNewarkMuseum, its Trustees and staff,
I ampleased to introduce and host the 2014 edition of
theNew Jersey FineArts Annual.We are proud of our
continuedpartnershipwith theNew Jersey StateCouncil
on theArts, which has orchestrated this annual series,
alternatingbetween arts and crafts each year, since 1984,
and to share this traditionwith theMontclairMuseum, the
MorrisMuseum, theNew Jersey StateMuseum and the
NoyesMuseumof Art.
TheNewarkMuseum is deeply committed to
contemporary art and artists engagingwith a variety of
practices. For this reason,
Ready or Not
showcases as
many as fortyNew Jersey-based contemporary artists,
whoseworks range in artistic processes and approaches
to color, form,material and content. Thismulti-dimensional
approach sets out to reestablish theMuseum’s rolewith
the local arts community by offering the institution as a
forum to expand and cultivate its commitment towards
this increasingly vital and independent art scene.
I commend this year’s exceptional cohort of artists,
and I am indebted to them for their involvement with
theMuseum and their creatively inspiringwork, which
enlivens themain suite of changing exhibition space of the
Museum and expands through uncommon, less traditional
areas such as stairwells and corridorswhere visitors can
encounter art in unexpected situations and locations.
Likewise, I am grateful to the exhibition’s curator, Shlomit
Dror, ConsultingCurator of AmericanArt at theNewark
Museum, whose vision andpersistencemade this
exhibition the success that it has been. I alsowant to
thank this exhibition’s co-juror, RocíoAranda-Alvarado,
Curator at El Museodel Barrio inNewYork, whose
involvement and input in the selection process brought
great energy, knowledge and ideas. I thank the staff of
theNewarkMuseum for their contribution, particularly
exhibition designers, TimWintemberg andSethGoodwin,
whose creativeness, dedication and expertise has been
As the recently appointeddirector of theNewarkMuseum,
I consider this tobemy first Arts Annual exhibition, and
amdelighted towelcome andwitness somany talents
across theGardenState. I am thrilledby the roster of
artists participating in this year’s Arts Annual andby their
contribution to theMuseum and its visitors’ experience.
The diversity of media andpractice evident in these
artworks indeed reflects the state’s abundance and
production in visual culture andmultidisciplinary art. The
artworks this show contains support themerge of art and
science, asmany of them are technology-based, requiring
painstaking code programming and other software
development. Included are also a variety of site-specific
works, both inside andoutside theMuseum’s campus that
brought artists to creatework outside their studios and
