Community Day: Day of the Dead / Día de la Comunidad: Día de los Muertos

Celebrate Day of the Dead with us!

This virtual program brings together food, people, dance, and traditions. Join us to learn about how culture celebrate and remember their loved ones. Enjoy story readings, cooking demonstrations, dance performances, and much more. Gather around the computer with your loved ones to enjoy this special day!

The programs are in English with Spanish vocabulary sprinkled throughout.

Este programa virtual reúne comida, gente, danza y tradiciones. Únase a nosotros para conocer cómo la cultura celebra y recuerda a sus seres queridos. Disfrute de lecturas de cuentos, demostraciones de cocina, espectáculos de danza y mucho más. ¡Reúnase alrededor de la computadora con sus seres queridos para disfrutar de este día especial!

Los programas están en inglés con vocabulario español espolvoreado por todos lados.

Storytime Live with Newark Public Library, 10am
Recommended for ages 5+
Let’s read a story! Join Yesenia from the Newark Public Library for a reading of Coco - La Guitarra de Miguel/ Miguel's Guitar by R.J. Cregg. After the story we will play like Miguel and make our own guitar out of recycled cardboard.

Materials needed: Glue, Rubberbands, Two pencils, Shoe box or cereal box, Cardboard tube (like from paper towels), Markers, Popsicle sticks, Scissors. Please note parental/guardian assistance is necessary for younger children.

Tiempo de cuentos en vivo con Newark Public Library, 10am
Recomendado para niños de 5 años en adelante
¡Leamos un cuento! Acompañen a Yesenia de Newark Public Library y disfruten de la lectura de Coco - La Guitarra de Miguel/ Miguel's Guitar de R.J. Cregg. Después del cuento tocaremos la guitarra como Miguel y haremos nuestras propias guitarras con cartón reciclado. Tomen de la mano a un adulto en casa y sigan las indicaciones de un educador del museo.

Materiales necesarios: Adhesivo, bandas elásticas, dos lápices, caja de zapatos o de cereales, tubo de cartón (como los de servilletas de papel), marcadores, palitos de helado, tijeras. Recuerden que es necesaria la presencia de un padre/tutor para los niños pequeños.

What is Día De Muertos? What is All Saints Day? How do cultures celebrate it around the world? Learn the meaning and history of one of Mexico’s oldest and most beloved traditions and take part in an altar making activity led by Mano a Mano. 

Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders is a New York-based non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating Mexican culture and promoting the understanding of Mexican traditions through arts, culture, humanities, and annual celebrations of holidays.

¿Qué es el Día de Muertos? ¿Qué es el Dia de Todos los Santos? ¿Cómo lo celebran las culturas en todo el mundo? Conozcan el significado y la historia de una de las tradiciones más antiguas y queridas de México y participen en la actividad de construcción de un altar dirigida por Mano a Mano.  

Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders (Cultura mexicana sin fronteras) es una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Nueva York dedicada a celebrar la cultura mexicana y a promover la comprensión de las tradiciones mexicanas a través de las artes, la cultura, las humanidades y las celebraciones anuales de los días festivos.

Women in Day of the Dead Outfits - Campeche - Yucatan Peninsula - Mexico

Day of the Dead Makeup Tutorial, 1pm
Recommended for all ages

Join our guest makeup artist Vanesa Varela also known as @Beautyychick on Instagram for a Day of the Dead makeup tutorial. Watch and follow along as our MUA designs her own Catrina skull. Draw inspiration from this tradition and learn how to bring your own creation to life.

Let’s Eat! Celebrating Día De Muertos with Food, 2:30pm
Recommended for all ages

Holidays & celebrations always center around the kitchen table! Learn from Food Expert Leticia Schwartz as she makes you some of her favorite dishes to celebrate Día De Muertos. These modern takes on grandma’s classic meals will have you wanting to get in the kitchen and try them for yourself. 

Recipes include Chicken with Mole Sauce & Dulce de Leche Bread Pudding.

¡Los días festivos y las celebraciones siempre se centran alrededor de la mesa de la cocina! Estas versiones modernas de las comidas clásicas de la abuela les darán ganas de entrar a la cocina y preparar estos platos ustedes mismos.

Newark Latino Film Festival Presents, 6pm
Recommended for all ages
Experience a screening of three short films all by Latinx film makers. In partnership with the Newark Latino Film Festival we end our day long celebration with short films and a Q&A with the filmmakers.

We will be screening the following films:

  • Yo Soy Taino (I Am Taíno or Dak’toká Taíno), by Alba Garcia-Rivas (10 min.)
  • Identidad, by  Dio Cholul (12 min.)
  • Arturo Alfonso Schomburg: Father of Black History, by Judith Escalona (4 min.)

Register for the panel to receive the links to watch the short films. The films will be available for viewing from October 23 to November 4.

Experimenten la proyección de tres cortometrajes realizados por cineastas Latinx. En asociación con el Festival de Cine Latino de Newark, terminamos nuestra celebración de todo un día con cortometrajes y una ronda de preguntas y respuestas con los cineastas.
