Fire Museum

Fire Escapes: Danger & Survival is an exciting and important new initiative to teach fire safety and prevention to thousands of children and families from throughout Newark and surrounding communities.

Embracing the Museum’s commitment to providing exhibition and education initiatives for young people based on experiential learning, this exhibit is a high-tech, hands-on, interactive learning environment. Highlights include a real modified fire truck cab that children can climb on and explore, a demonstration area with fire gear, clothing and equipment that children can try on, and a Hazard House featuring special effects and interactive devices to provide a simulated experience for locating fire dangers within the home and safely escaping without harm.

The exhibit A Cry of Fire: The New Jersey Fire Story, features historic protective clothing, equipment, illustrations and memorabilia to help visitors better understand the history of fire fighting and outstanding bravery of the men who battled life threatening fires. This exhibit’s centerpiece is a recently conserved and rare 1853 Fire Hose Cart built for the Neptune Hose Company No. 1 of Newark. Other exhibit highlights convey the value which firefighters contribute to every community, as well as recognition of the sacrifices of firefighters at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

The Fire Museum is co-organized with the Newark Fire Department Historical Association. Fire Museum exhibits and programs funded by the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters program, the New Jersey Historical Commission, the Newark Museum Volunteer Organization, the Newark Museum Business & Community Council and My9.

Our thoughts are with our neighbors in Jersey City during this difficult time. As a small gesture we would like to offer up the Museum as a community sanctuary and safe place for reflection, as well as waive admission fees for all residents for the remainder of the year. https://t.co/Fn0KJ8jG05
