Library & Archives

  • English

The Library and Archives are the research divisions of the Museum.

The Library contains more than 50,000 volumes on the fine arts, the decorative arts, and the natural sciences.  It is particularly strong in the following areas:  American painting and sculpture; African art; Asian art, including a special collection on Tibet; Native American art; Oceanic art; the decorative arts of the United States and Europe; the Classical cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world; numismatics; the Natural Sciences; and astronomy.

The Archives serves as the repository of the historical records of the institution dating from 1909 to the present.  It contains a wealth of information on past exhibitions in the arts and sciences, on the activities of the educational departments, and on the administration of the institution.  These collections consist of more than 2,500 linear feet of paper-based, photographic, and electronic records.  Among the many significant collections are the records of the Junior Museum, the Newark Black Film Festival, the Michael Graves Renovation Project, and many others.

The Library and Archives are open to the public by appointment, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.  Visitors range from independent scholars, museum professionals, professors and teachers, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as members of the general public.

The materials in the Library and Archives do not circulate; consequently, all materials must be used in the Reading Room.  Limited inter-library loan services are available to other institutions, and requests should be made in writing via mail, fax or email.

The Library's on-line public access catalog is available through the Newark Public Library's union catalog at http://catalog.npl.org/search
