In the cosmology of Mahayana Buddhism specific paradises are associated with particular buddha and bodhisattva. One of the most popular of these paradises is Sukhavati, the western heaven that is the realm of Amitabha, Buddha of Limitless Light also populated by members of his “family” including Amitayus and Lokeshvara. Some Buddhist practitioners pray to be reborn in the pure land of Sukhavati as a central focus, as individuals who reach Sukhavati will eventually attain nirvana (ceasing cyclic existence).
