Community Day: MLK Jr. Day Celebration--Breaking Down Barriers

Presented by Horizon Foundation for New Jersey

Monday, January 18, 2021, 10am-5pm


Join us for our annual celebration honoring the life and legacy of one of this nation’s greatest heroes: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year we highlight how barriers were broken and continue to be broken with a woman of color to become vice president of the United States.

Start your MLK Jr. Day with this inspiring musical performance, directed by Chinah Blac. Featuring historical and contemporary footage, the continuing fight for equality is explored and celebrated with passion, love, and hope.

Artmaking: Hair Love with Adebunmi Gbadebo, 10:30am
Recommended for ages 6 and up

Inspired by the animated short film Hair Love (2019), this hands-on workshop will teach you ways to create art that reflects who you are.

Gbadebo is a visual artist who creates sculptures, paintings, prints, and paper using human hair sourced from people of the African diaspora. Rejecting traditional art materials, Gbadebo saw hair as a means to center her people and their histories as central to the narratives in her work.

Adebunmi Gbadebo es una artista visual que crea esculturas, cuadros, estampados y papel usando cabello humano obtenido de personas pertenecientes a la diáspora africana. Gbadebo rechazó los materiales artísticos tradicionales y consideró el cabello como un medio para dar protagonismo a su pueblo y sus historias en las narrativas de su trabajo.
